If God Loves Me, Why Is He Letting This Hurt So Much?

You are not asking a theological question. You are asking a personal one.

You are asking it at two in the morning, with the house quiet and the ceiling too close. You are asking it in the car after the appointment. You are asking it with your hands over your face.

If He loves me, why is He letting this hurt so much?

I am not going to hurry you past that question. It deserves better than a slogan.

Love is not the same thing as protection from pain

We were taught, somewhere along the way, that love means shielding. A father who loves keeps the hard thing away. So when the hard thing arrives, the math seems simple: the love must have failed, or the love was never there.

But look at the cross. God did not spare His own Son. Romans 8:32 says exactly that — He did not spare Him, and then calls it the proof of His generosity, not the proof of His absence.

Love did not keep Jesus out of Gethsemane. Love went into Gethsemane with Him.

God is not the author of everything that happens to you

Much of what hurts you is not sent. It is inherited. It is the wear of a broken world, the choices of other people, the failure of a body that was always going to fail eventually.

God is not standing behind every wound with His hand still on it. James 1:17 says every good and perfect gift comes down from Him. It does not say every event does.

Some of your pain is simply what happens in a world that is not yet healed. Reading it as a message from God will torture you with a message He never sent.

What He promised, and what He did not

He did not promise you an easy road. He promised you company on it.

Hebrews 13:5 — I will never leave you nor forsake you. Isaiah 43:2 — when you pass through the waters, I will be with you. Not around. Through.

That is a smaller promise than the one we want, and a far larger one than we understand. Anyone can want the storm to stop. Only God can be in it with you and not flinch.

What love looks like when it cannot look like rescue

It looks like the friend who does not leave. It looks like the strength that shows up at exactly the hour you needed it and not one hour sooner. It looks like the mercy that is new tomorrow morning, when you were sure you had used up the last of it tonight.

It looks like a Savior who was wounded, so that when you say you do not know what this is like, He can quietly say that He does.

If you take one thing from this

Your pain is not evidence against His love.

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus — Romans 8:1 — and there is no hidden verdict inside your suffering. You are not being paid back. You are being carried, in the dark, by someone who has been here before you.

Stay. Morning is not as far off as it feels.

If this question is living in you right now, I wrote a short book about it. When Fire Does Not Consume: It Transforms is free to read, and so is How Jesus Faced Gethsemane.
