When Everything Starts Falling Apart, Is God Doing It?

It rarely comes one at a time. The job, then the health, then the marriage, then the friend who was supposed to stay.

And the question arrives with it, uninvited: is God doing this?

Here is what I have come to believe after sitting with people in the wreckage for a long time. Most of the time, God is not the one swinging the hammer. He is the one revealing what was already cracked — and standing in the room while it comes down.

Revealing is not the same as causing

A storm does not build a weak roof. It finds one.

1 Corinthians 3 describes fire testing what a life was built out of. The fire does not manufacture the straw. It shows you the straw was there.

When something in your life collapses under pressure, the pressure gets the blame. But pressure only ever tells the truth about what was holding the weight.

Some collapse is mercy

This is hard to hear early, so hold it loosely until you are ready for it.

There are structures that must fall before you can live. A false peace. A job that was eating you. A version of yourself built entirely out of other people's approval.

Losing those feels identical to being destroyed. It is not. It is being emptied out so there is room for something that will hold.

And some collapse is simply grief

Not everything that falls was rotten. Sometimes what breaks was good, and beautiful, and yours, and it broke anyway because we live in a world that is still groaning — Romans 8:22.

Do not let anyone hand you a lesson at that grave. You are allowed to just be sad. Jesus wept at a tomb He was about to open.

Where God actually is in it

Psalm 34:18 — the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Not close afterward. Close now, at the worst hour, in the dust of it.

He is not up on the ridge watching your valley from a distance. He is in the valley. That is the whole scandal of the incarnation — God came down into the part we were trying to escape.

What to do while it is still coming down

Do not read the collapse as a verdict. Do not rebuild in a panic. Do not decide who God is on the worst day you have ever had.

Do the next honest thing. Tell Him the truth about how it feels. Let people help you.

And when it settles — and it will settle — you will find that what was left standing is what was always real. Isaiah 61 calls it beauty for ashes. You cannot get ashes without a fire. But you cannot get that kind of beauty any other way.

If this question is living in you right now, I wrote a short book about it. When Fire Does Not Consume: It Transforms is free to read, and so is How Jesus Faced Gethsemane.
